What is mathematics?   Most people would say it has something to do with numbers, but numbers are just one type of mathematical structure.   Saying “math is the study of numbers” (or something similar) is like saying that “zoology is the study of giraffes”.  Math may be better thought of as the study of patterns, but this too falls short…

The more I study math, the more I wonder about what exactly math is.  Actually nobody knows.   It seems to be a product or our minds, and yet reflects the external universe with uncanny accuracy.   A mathematician develops a mathematical theory for its aesthetic unworldly beauty and it’s compelling evolution, with no thought of how it might be applied to the world.    A century later a physicist finds this theory to be perfect to use as a framework to express his physics (this sort of thing happens frequently).   Pretty weird how intimately connected our innermost “mind” and the outermost “universe” really are.   This is a profound mystery!

Bruce Bennett, my advisor in grad school, defines mathematics as “unified consciousness theory”.   As you come to master a branch of mathematics, it’s as though you’ve grown a new abstract organ of perception through which you may then view the world.  You’ve grown a new “mind’s eye” that can perceive realities literally inconceivable without this new organ of perception.

Zero

Is zero a number? Two ways to answer this one, the simple answer and the complicated mathematical answer.

The simple answer: Yes, zero is a number but you are not alone if you wonder why. Indian mathematicians first came up with the number idea around 650 AD. Originally, perhaps as early as 200 AD, they used zero as a placeholder in another number. For example, in our notation: 216 is a different number than 2016. This use of zero advanced trade, commerce, and bookkeeping but does not qualify zero as a number. Zero, in its place-keeping function, is a kind of punctuation mark to help us interpret numbers correctly[1].

The mathematical answer: Zero is clearly an element of the set of Real Numbers, it’s the “additive identity” — the number that, when added to any other number x, doesn’t change the value of x. (Similarly, 1 is the multiplicative identity — the number that, when multiplied by any other number x, doesn’t change the value of x.) Thus, zero is a number, just as any other element of the set of Real Numbers is a number.

But before you get to the Real Numbers, you probably start with the Counting Numbers or Natural Numbers, the set N = {1, 2, 3, …} in set notation. Zero isn’t a member of the set of Natural Numbers since you normally don’t start counting with zero. A primitive society developing a counting system wouldn’t think of “none” … they’d start counting with “one.” Thus, if by “number” you mean “the set of all Natural Numbers,” then zero isn’t among them. Of course, the concept of zero makes its appearance pretty early historically (the idea of using zero as a placeholder digit comes later, but that’s notational, and a different story)[2].

Mengakali Keterbatasan Blogging di WordPress.com

Akhirnya… Sukses juga mengutak-atik dan menata ulang tampilan Blog ku di wordpress.com. Masalah mulai muncul karena keterbatasan akses coding css untuk pengguna biasa yang berikan oleh WordPress.com. Beberapa keterbatasan yang muncul.

1. Susahnya menampilkan gambar yang kita inginkan pada halaman awal Blog.
2. Tidak tersedianya BackGround Music di WordPress.com. Kalo mau pasang musing latar maka anda diwajibkan mengupdate Blog anda.
3. Menata Tampilan dan sebagainya.

Alhamdulillah, Permasalahan di atas sedikit demi sedikit bisa diatasi. Beberapa Perubahan yang buat:

1. Menampilkan gambar/Foto dengan mengubah sedikit perintah melalui Widget:Text

2. Menampilkan Music juga melalui Widget:Text. Tetapi ini harus dikombinasikan dengan www.videokeman.com

3. Menyisipkan rss feed berita, ini sih belum rapi tapi boleh lah digunakan untuk sementara.

How to Stop and Disable Web pages AutoRefresh?

Have you ever noticed how some web sites automatically reload the page every minute or two? It’s frustrating, unnecessary, and thankfully can be easily disabled in Firefox.

1. How to Stop and Block Web Pages from Auto Refresh or Reload in Firefox

In Firefox, go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> General -> Accessibility section, and then tick the check box labeled as Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page.

Checking the option is equivalent to setting accessibility.blockautorefresh preference setting in about:config to True.

2. How to Stop and Block Web Pages from Auto Refresh or Reload in Internet Explorer

Auto refresh is a useful feature of Internet Explorer. It allows websites to automatically reload with the latest content. It is especially useful for websites with quickly changing content such as Facebook. The refreshing makes it possible for content to appear consistently, without interruption.

However, sites using this feature sometimes end up annoying the user rather than providing them with a better user experience. Constant refreshing can slow down older computers, or can cause information that you need to disappear. If you want to disable automatic refreshing, here’s how.

Step 1: Start Internet Explorer if it is not running already. Click on Tools and then Internet Options.

Step 2: In the Internet Options dialog box, click on the Security tab and then select Internet Zone. Click on the button below labeled Custom Level.

Step 3: Scroll down the list that pops up until you find the entry called Allow Meta Refresh. You can see two option buttons below the entry: Disable and Enable. By default, it should be enabled. Disable it and click OK.

Step 4: Click Apply and OK on the Internet Options dialog box. That is it! Your page will no longer refresh automatically anymore, so you will not have to worry about content being updated or changed without your permission.

Although this solves the annoying problem of a web page refreshing every few seconds, let me make it clear that meta refresh is important. Many websites use it to direct the visitors to the correct web page, though the use of meta refresh is discouraged by the W3C. The use of Meta refresh by websites is decreasing day by day and is being replaced by JavaScript functions or HTTP redirection headers.

Oktober 1986

Parit Melayu.

Suasana malam ini kelam sekali. Hembusan angin juga terasa dingin. Tadi sore hujan lebat. Maklum sekarang musim hujan. Aku yakin nggak ada orang mau keluar rumah dalam keadaan cuaca seperti ini.

Angin mendesir pelan, menembus masuk ke dalam rumahku melalui sela-sela dinding rumah yang bolong-bolong di makan anai-anai. Nyala lampu minyak bergoyang-goyang. Aku segera mengulurkan kedua tanganku melingkari nyala apinya supaya tidak padam. Goyangannya sedikit reda, tapi seisi rumahku jadi gelap. Lebih baik aku biarkan saja, pikirku. Toh ibuku butuh penerangan juga. Ia melipat baju-bajuku dengan rapi.

Aku kembali duduk terpekur menyaksikan kesibukan ibu. Ia memasukkan baju-baju ke dalam tas yang lebih mirip dengan bantal guling yang di beri tali kedua ujungnya. Perasaaanku jadi campur aduk.

“Mana buku tulis yang ibu belikan kemaren?” tanya ibu. Aku segera tersadar.

“kusimpan di atas lemari.”jawabku.

“Ambilkan, sekalian ibu masukkan ke dalam tas, supaya tidak ketinggalan.” Perintah ibu.

Aku bergegas mengambil buku-buku tersebut. Lalu keserahkan ke ibu. Aku tidak tahu mau kuapakan buku ini. Tapi yang pasti ini benda yang akan selalu menemaniku setiap hari. setelah selesai, tas itu di sandarkan ke dinding.

Kupandangi tas, serta kotak itu. Hatiku semakin bergemuruh. Berarti aku benar-benar harus meninggalkan rumah. Air mataku perlahan menyebar membasahi bulu-bulu mataku, cahaya lampu minyakpun perlahan kulihat berantakan, dipenuhi warna kuning ke emasan, bercampur  pekat hitamnya malam. Aku menangis. Selang beberapa lama kemudian, aku sesenggukkan.

“Sudahlah jangan menangis.”kata ibuku. “Jadi lelaki itu harus kuat, tidak boleh lemah dan harus pintar, makanya kamu harus sekolah. Ibu janji setiap liburan, nanti ayah menjemputmu.”

Aku masih sesenggukan. Sesekali punggung tanganku menyeka kedua mataku. Siapa yang lemah pikirku, aku kuat, tapi aku belum siap berpisah dengan kalian. Nanti kalau sudah besar baru aku mau merantau, ke ujung dua sekalipun aku mau, batinku.

Janji ibu juga tidak meluluhkan hatiku. malah aku merasa getir mendengar janji itu. Liburan untuk anak sekolahan kan jarang sekali. Berarti aku akan sangat jarang bertemu dengan ibu dan ayah serta adik kecilku yang berumur dua setengah tahun. Paling banter bertemu keluarga hanya 3 kali dalam setahun. Itu pun kalau ayahku tepat menjemput ketika sedang musim libur sekolah, kalau tidak maka aku tidak akan bisa bertemu dengan ibu. bagi anak umur 6 tahun seperti aku, ini adalah hal terberat.

“Rasanya aku masih mau disini.” Kataku. “toh teman-temanku semua masih di kampung, mereka tidak ke mana-mana. Kalo mau sekolah nanti kalo aku udah 10 tahun saja.”

Terus terang, aku memang iri sama teman-temanku yang lain. Mereka bebas menentukan keinginannya. Toh aku lihat mereka bahagia juga, bahkan bisa membantu orang tuanya, ke sawah, ke kebun atau menangkap ikan untuk dijadikan lauk pauk. Jadi buat apa pergi jauh-jauh untuk sekolah. Toh nantinya kalau sudah lebih besar lagi aku bisa sekolah di Parit Baco, sama teman-teman.

Ibuku memandangiku dalam-dalam.

“Dengar, Nak. Sekarang kamu belum mengerti arti penting sekolah. Nanti juga kamu faham.” Katanya lagi. “Apa kamu mau jadi buruh petani seumur-umur, jadi buruh pekerja kelapa di kebun-kebun orang lain. Apa kamu mau seperti kami, hidup di kampung terus mengerjakan yang itu-itu saja. Kamu kan mau jadi tentara, kalo mau jadi tentara ya harus sekolah.”

Aku menundukkan kepala sampai di antara kedua lututku, kemudian kedua tanganku melingkari kedua betisku. Aku belum sepenuhya faham dengan apa yang dimaksud ibuku. Tapi aku memang ingin sekali menjadi tentara. Aku suka sekali melihat pakaian loreng.

Sejujurnya aku belum tahu kenapa ibuku begitu ngotot untuk menyekolahkan aku, toh sepengetahuanku ibu maupun ayah tidak pernah memiliki selembar ijazahpun, lalu kenapa ia terlalu bersikeras menginginkan aku sekolah? Sebagian orangtua tidak ingin berpisah dengan anaknya yang masih kecil, orang tuaku malah sebaliknya.

“Sudah, ayo tidur! besok pagi-pagi kamu berangkat ke Parit Jarjani sama ayah.” Kata ibu. “Jangan lupa pasang kelambu. Nyamuk banyak.”

Aku beringsut, lalu melangkah gontai menuju bilikku. Sementara angin malam berdesir lagi, mengantarkan hawa dingin musim hujan, menyelusup menembus sarung besar yang kugunakan untuk berkemul. Nyamuk-nyamuk bernyanyi girang di dekat telingaku menandakan malam semakin larut.
